Senate Bill 5444 and House Bill 1410

Last night the Fourth Corner Executive Board approved funding for our multi-faceted attack on SB 5444 and HB 1410. As activists, your participation and leadership is critical in putting the plan to action. As each phase is ready for your action, you will receive more details.

The first piece of the plan is to educate our members on the bills and why they are bad for education so they will be compelled to contact their legislators. Hopefully the tools sent yesterday will assist you in that effort. In addition, we will be sending a mailing directly to each member early next week with the same message. We need members to cyber-lobby as often as they can. More details will be coming about a possible member postcard campaign as well.

For right now, though, the biggest and potentially most impactful portion of our plan requires your action TODAY. We will be sending 20 Fourth Corner members to Olympia several times per week to lobby directly with our legislators. Fourth Corner will pay for release time and mileage (carpooling is strongly encouraged!). That being said, if your local has the ability to pay your own release and/or mileage, that would be helpful as well. Individuals and/or locals will be responsible for any additional costs (i.e. food).

Please do the following ASAP:

  1. Look at the list of dates below and email Edna at ebarnhouse-lopez@washingtonea.org with a day you are willing to go. Since our first lobby day is Monday of next week, the more of you who can go on Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday the better. Please let us know ASAP (today would be ideal).
  2. Get the dates out to your members and send Edna the names and contact info. of other members who are available to go on each day.

As the dates come closer, we will notify those who sign up regarding where to meet and when.

The dates are as follows:

    Monday, Feb. 9

    Tuesday, Feb. 10

    Wednesday, Feb. 11

Monday, Feb. 16 (Presidents' Day holiday - no school this day, but the legislators are in session)

    Wednesday, Feb. 18

    Monday, Feb. 23

    Tuesday, Feb. 24

    Wednesday, Feb. 25

Thank you again for your active leadership in Fourth Corner. It can be overwhelming to think of the task ahead, but you have proven time and time again that no task is too big for WEA-Fourth Corner! Together we can and absolutely must defeat these bills.

Sincerely,

Nyda Smith

Many of the concerns that WEA raises about this House Bill are valid points. This Bill will bring MAJOR change to basic education in Washington State.
You are going to be bombarded with information, accusations and wild claims by those who support this bill and those who are against it. My recommendation is that you educate yourself.

GET INVOLVED!

Read through the concerns and then read through the actual Bill. You should make your own determinations. If you are concerned about this Bill, then you need to take action. Contact
me: cdellutri@anacortesea.org

or WEA directly to see what you can do.---------------------------à
