Bargaining Update…

The Anacortes Education Association bargaining team has been making a concerted effort to protect your basic rights as an employee in this district.  We want to make sure you feel safe and secure in the job you do.  We also want to make sure you are adequately compensated for your hard work.

So far we have had six formal negotiation sessions with the District and have reached tentative agreement in the following areas:

  • Employee assignment (Language involving voluntary transfers; Vacancy and Vacancy Postings.)
  • Student/Staff Safety concerns and Policy
  • Classroom Visitation Policy
  • Super FTE (language for individuals who agree to work during contracted prep time)
  • Review of Staff Evaluation Policy

Once a tentative agreement is reached on an issue, it is put aside until agreement is reached on all issues.  Then all tentative agreements are presented to you, the membership, for final approval.

The District and the Association are still negotiating many important issues.  The remaining issues still under discussion are:

  • Supplemental Insurance Dollars
  • Class Size (cap numbers and overload compensation)
  • Personal Leave
  • Additional Compensated Hours
    • TRI Hours
    • Mandatory Hours
  • RIF Language
  • Involuntary Transfer Language
  • Supervisory responsibilities outside the contracted work day.

Although a lot of progress has been made and the process has been productive, it’s not likely we will reach tentative agreement on all the issues prior to the summer break. Your team is working to coordinate with building reps so we can

keep you posted throughout the summer. We’re collecting and updating phone trees. Building Reps will collect home e-mails in the next week. We want to be able to contact members outside of the school environment. We’re also creating a support team for each building site. When it’s time to connect again with membership, we’ll be prepared to do so. You should plan on a late summer general membership meeting for a complete update on the process up to that point.

From My Corner

I’d like to thank the membership once again for its trust in Association leadership as we move forward and continue to build a stronger local. At our April meeting, membership voted to increase the local dues assessment by $5 per month. The change will take place on your September paycheck.

Your vote will provide the Association with a realistic financial viability. We can keep the books in order and offer new programs and opportunities to the membership.

I’m also excited by the infusion of new blood into the Association. Carl Dellutri has stepped up as both bargaining support coordinator and VP for next year. Kecia Fox, IV, and Angie Miller, ME, will be building reps. It’s great to see.

As the school year comes to an end and we shift our focus to rejuvenation and professional development, I take a great sense of connection with the membership into the summer months. I’m encouraged by the direction of our local and the efforts of your Bargaining team. We will work throughout the summer if needed to reach the best agreement possible.– Peter Donaldson
