Negotiations

With the Elections over, your Association Leadership is ready to begin the process of negotiating your new contract.  We want to address the issues that are important to you, so we will be sending out surveys and we will be scheduling listening campaigns.  Be part of the process.  Be part of the solution.  Get involved.  We are striving for Excellence!.

You are the professionals; you were the one who attended all of the educational coursework and completed all of the rigorous certification requirements needed to become a teacher in this State.  We want to attract and keep good teachers in our district.   We want to promote a positive perception of the public education profession so that teachers get the respect and recognition that they deserve.  In this contract, we want to insure that you are fairly compensated for the work you do and that our contract takes into consideration the cost of living in Anacortes.  We need to address work conditions like planning time, class size, added curricular responsibilities, and the professional development mandated to keep your certification current.   We must make sure that your time and effort is valued.  We also want to make every effort to make sure that our language is detailed, clear, fair and legal.  This will help us to protect your contractual rights in the future.

You don’t need to be a building rep, or on the executive board, to be involved;  just ask questions and provide your opinions.

Remember that your local association can offer the greatest opportunities to insure professional security and competitive compensation by exercising the power of standing united.  While local bargaining remains a priority, there are some imitations to what a local contract can accomplish.   There are limits to funding available from local levies. Healthcare benefits, retirement benefits, the amount of seat time required for students are just some of the issues regulated by the State Legislature.

Be part of the process; be part of the solution; get involved.  Consider getting involved at the state level through involvement with WEA.

Thank you

Text Box: President’s Message –

We are striving for Excellence!

Excellent schools have great teachers.
How do we attract and keep excellent teachers? We provide fair compensation, security, respect and recognition. We recognize that teachers have their own families that also need their attention.

Excellent schools place students in classes that work.
How do we get classes that work? We limit the size of a class to insure that our students get the attention they need to be successful. We give teachers the time they need to develop good lessons, assess student progress and provide immediate and meaningful feedback. We insure that students and teachers have access to safe and modern facilities, current technology and any other tools that they need to be successful

Excellent schools provide a meaningful learning experience. How do we create this type of culture? We recognize the expertise of our teachers. We remember that they are professionals. We guarantee professional freedom in the classroom and allow teachers to present their curriculum in a manner that they feel best meets the needs of their students. But we also recognize the need for teacher to continue to learn. So we must provide the staff with meaningful professional development and training.
